Tata and Maruti are two well-known names in the Indian automobile sector. Both these makers concentrate on offering economical cars that are high on performance and low on expenses. They enjoy great consumer confidence and popularity among the masses. Although Maruti is the undisputed leader in the segment, Tata is not far behind with its continuous innovations and improvements. Now, both these companies are preparing for a showdown as the Tata Motors is all set to launch its newest car, a hatchback named Bolt.
When launched, the Bolt will give the greatest fight to the Maruti Swift, which is one the most popular and sought after models in the hatchback segment. Though it is a bit early to go into specifics and do a feature wise comparison, we are attempting to size up the cars against each other. As Bolt is yet to make its appearance on the roads, the specifications mentioned are more general in nature and not very specific. As the production version might carry a few changes from the concept version, changes could be expected.
Tata is yet to reveal the price of Bolt. However, given the high competition, it is possible that the Bolt will carry an affordable pricing on it. Accordingly, it is expected to come in the range of 4.6 lakh to 6.6 lakh rupees. The Maruti Swift is priced between 4.42 lakh to 6.71 lakh rupees. If Tata manages to price the Bolt in the same range, Swift will definitely feel the heat.
The Bolt will be launched in both petrol and diesel versions. The Petrol variant will run on a 1.2-liter Revtron engine of 84 bhp and 140 Nm capacities. The diesel mill featured will be a more powerful 1.3-liter Quadrajet engine of 89 bhp and 200 Nm capacities. Conversely, the Swift petrol variant features a 1.2-liter K-series engine of 85 bhp and 114 Nm capacities. The diesel mill of Swift is a 1.3-liter Multijet engine with 74 bhp and 190 Nm capabilities. It will mean that the Bolt will be faster and powerful than the Swift.
By the look of it, the Tata Bolt will offer many advanced technologies like a specially designed 5-inch touch screen entertainment system provided by Harman systems. It will also come with EPAS (electric power-assisted steering) with active return function, speed-sensing power steering, ABS, EBD, central locking, child lock and many more.
In contrast, the Swift features the usual paraphernalia of features like driver side power window, climate control, steering mounted audio controls, USB, automatic headlamps with electrically adjustable mirrors and so on.
One will have to await the actual launch of the Bolt to make a final statement. However, the signs suggest a winner in the making.
